Tota la seva conca està situat a Catalunya. Es travessa la serralada litoral, alternant l'ús industrial, a les Gorges amb les planes agrícoles. Desemboca formant un delta pantanós. Hi ha nombrosos llocs que en el seu temps eren essencialment agrícola i incloent Llobregat en el seu nom, com ara San Boi de Llobregat, Cornellà de Llobregat o el mateix El Prat de Llobregat. El riu supera els 170 km de llarg i té una conca de 4.948 km ².<br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> Seus afluents principals són el Cardener i l’Anoia, que rega una superfície de famosa explotació vinícola. A la conca del Llobregat moltes indústries van ser en els segles XIX i XX, que han aprofitat de la seva energia i aigua, destacant les anomenades «colònies industrials». L'aigua del riu rep nombroses aportacions de contaminació per residus líquids dels pobles situats al llarg del seu curs i indústries, però es fan esforços per reduir-los.
